Skydance Media and its largest private-equity backer RedBird Capital Partners have been wooing Paramount for the better part of a year. The Skydance consortium, including fellow Skydance investor KKR, submitted a revised offer on Sunday. The deal would be worth roughly $32 billion, according to the source, with the value of Paramount and its $15 billion in debt making up the lion's share. Here's what we know about the deal, how much Redstone would get, and what a new Paramount would look like. The music swells. I never expected the music to swell and the credits to roll with Mike Johnson’s face in the center of the frame. But before we move on to the next congressional melodrama, let’s make sure we’ve given Johnson his due. In an era this intensely and corrosively partisan, it’s especially important that we give warranted praise and appropriate thanks to people with whom we usually disagree. Tribalism discourages that, but a healthy democracy demands it.

The insects will infiltrate a much bigger geographical area than similar occurrences in most years because they’re part of the dual emergence of two particular periodical cicada broods. Although the full-scale emergence isn’t underway yet, experts have some guidance on how to prepare for cicada season. A young tree in Takoma Park, Maryland, is draped in netting in May 2021 to protect its small branches from being damaged by periodical cicadas laying their eggs in them. Opinion: Why gardens and poems rhyme
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
This year, particularly, I’ve been meditating on the fact that gardens and poems share critical, linked invitations. And because even as the planet warms, gardens and poems help cool us off, practically and emotionally. I don’t think I’m overstating the case to say that time spent with poems and gardens build pathways that actually repair us. In their own small plots, poems build diverse networks as well: Sinking into the rhythms and pleasures of literature stimulates the parts of our brains attuned to empathy, helping us build attention, kindness, compassion, regard. Gardens and poems invite that kind of dwelling.

Strange fungus turns cicadas into zombies

But some of these insects won’t succeed in their goal of procreating — instead, they’ll be controlled like zombies into spreading a strange fungus that hijacks cicadas’ bodies and behavior. At some point, the insects are exposed to spores of the fungus Massospora cicadina. Courtesy Angie Macias/WVUDespite having a chalky gumdrop of spores instead of genitals, the infected cicadas still attempt to mate, with gusto. Both male and female cicadas infected with Massospora flick their wings to draw in amorous, soon-to-be-infected males. But when I discovered a London-based project turning discarded chicken feathers into edible proteins, I admit I was skeptical. The company behind the project, Kera Protein Ltd., has a unique approach to its lab-produced protein product. Since then, he and his business partner, Tom Washington, have delved into the issue of waste management - focusing particularly on chicken feathers. To make the food we tried, Kera extracted feathers from discarded chicken carcasses in partnership with a local farm. “We hope to revolutionize the way people view chicken feathers, demonstrating their potential as a valuable resource rather than just a dirty by-product.”
